Inaugural SoCal Elite Goalie Camp a huge success

Southern California’s Goalie Stars LLC and Puck Warriors Goaltending from Oshawa, Ont., joined forces for their first annual 2018 SoCal Elite Goalie Camp last month.

Goalie Camp director and Goalie Stars head instructor Corrie Woolcott partnered with Steve Schut, the owner and head of development for Puck Warriors Goaltending, to a run a high-performance, well-organized developmental camp on May 19-20 at THE RINKS-Lakewood ICE.

The camp included two elite goalie age groups from Squirt 10U/Pee Wee 12U and Bantam 14U/Midget 16U. Each group had a maximum capacity of 18 goalies, received eight hours of on ice, dryland training, and lunch was catered and provided by sponsor Berkley’s Backyard BBQ.

“Our goal for the camp was to help each goaltender build on their existing foundation, introduce and reinforce new acquired knowledge while encouraging good habits through positive feedback,” said Woolcott. “All our goalie drills were demonstrated by high-performing junior goalies from Canada and the USA. Major focus was placed on neuroscience brain-based learning as we analyzed each drill, discussed proper positioning technique and reinforced muscle memory through repetition.”

The coaches also presented the Most Valuable Goalie Awards for the goaltender who demonstrated the most exemplary attitude and had the highest hard work ethic. The winners were Aaron Sachs (San Diego native, Anaheim Jr. Ducks 2007 AAA) for the Squirt/Pee Wee group and James Mandavia from the Pasadena Maple Leafs for the Bantam/Midget group.

Planning is already underway for the next camp, which will be held in June 2019.
