Jr. Kings’ Squirt A team rolls in Phoenix

The Los Angeles Jr. Kings’ Squirt A team celebrated the championship in its division at this year’s Coyotes Cup, which was contested over the holidays in the Phoenix area.

Thanks to a strong, all-around team effort, L.A. forged a perfect 5-0 record at the event, outscoring its opponents an impressive 30-4.

“This was a great win for our club, and well deserved,” said Jr. Kings head coach Andrew Stone. “Everyone contributed to our success, and that’s what’s most gratifying.”

The Jr. Kings opened the tournament with an 8-0 victory over Arizona Hockey Union Black, followed by an 8-2 triumph over the Jr. Sun Devils.

The club rolled along with consecutive 4-1 victories over Mission Arizona and Arizona Hockey Union Black before blanking Mission in the finale, 6-0.

Defenseman Tyler Chiovetti, who struck for a team-high 10 points (five goals) during the showcase, and forward Duke Gentzler, who connected for three goals for eight points, were named the division’s co-Most Valuable Players.

Between the pipes, goaltender Micah Kawaii backstopped L.A. to all five of its wins.

“It’s a great group of kids and a great, selfless group of families, and collectively their hard work paid off,” Stone added. “As a coach, I couldn’t be more proud.”
