Newport Coast’s Lown cops NAHL honor

Newport Coast’s Ben Lown was named the North American Hockey League’s (NAHL) South Division Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 27 after helping the Wichita Falls Wildcats forge a 3-0-1 record at the NAHL Showcase in Minnesota and a first-place tie in the South Division.

The 17-year-old totaled six points in the four games, which included five assists and a plus-6 rating.

After going scoreless in an opening win over the Minot Minotauros, the 5-foot-7, 150-pound Lown picked up an assist in a victory over the Coulee Region Chill and registered two multi-point games in a triumph over the Kenai River Brown Bears and shootout loss against the New Jersey Titans.

“Ben got more confident and showed improvement each game,” said Wildcats head coach John LaFontaine. “He’s blessed with tremendous speed.

“The biggest thing he did was finding his open teammates, which created a lot of scoring chances over the weekend.”

Lown, who skated locally for the Los Angeles Jr. Kings, will play his NCAA Division I hockey at the University of Miami-Ohio following his junior career, currently leads the Wildcats in scoring with nine points through six games played.
