AHL approves new franchise for Henderson, Golden Knights’ top affiliate to play at Orleans Arena

The American Hockey League announced last month that the AHL Board of Governors has approved the transfer of ownership of the San Antonio Rampage AHL franchise to the Vegas Golden Knights, as well as the relocation of that franchise from San Antonio, Tex., to Henderson/Las Vegas, effective with the 2020-21 season.

The Golden Knights’ AHL affiliate will play at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas for the 2020-21 season.

“Since our initial season ticket drive began five years ago in February 2015, we have witnessed firsthand the incredible passion and enthusiasm our community has for hockey,” said Golden Knights chairman-CEO Bill Foley. “By every relevant metric, the growth of the game here the last few years at all levels has been remarkable. We could not be more proud to bring a second professional hockey club to the Valley to accelerate this growth even further.

“AHL hockey is coming to our great city. Local residents have responded with incredible enthusiasm over the last month, as we have received over 7,000 season ticket deposits to date. We are committed to creating memorable, positive experiences for our fans and their families. We would like to thank the American Hockey League, Spurs Sports & Entertainment, our colleagues at the Orleans Hotel, (Henderson) Mayor Debra March and the entire city of Henderson for their commitment and effort to making this process a success. We can’t wait to drop the puck this fall.”

“It’s been a goal of the Vegas Golden Knights to have our AHL team located in our market since our team’s inception,” added Vegas president of hockey operations George McPhee. “We are now closer to realizing this goal than we have ever been before. This move will effectively centralize our hockey operations and streamline our processes in terms of player development, scouting, transfers and staffing.”

Additional updates regarding the team and subsequent plans including team name, logo and ticket pricing will be announced at a later time.
