Yorba Linda’s Nieto wins weekly NAHL award

Gavin Nieto, a goaltender for the Fairbanks Ice Dogs, was named the North American Hockey League (NAHL) Midwest Division Star of the Week for the week ending Dec. 20.

Nieto, a 19-year-old from Yorba Linda, started and won both games in a two-game road sweep of the New Jersey Titans, allowing just one goal in each and stopping 50 of 52 shots total.

On Friday, the former Los Angeles Jr. King made 22 saves in a 3-1 win and, on Saturday, he turned aside 28 in a 2-1 victory.

“Gavin showed great leadership against a really good New Jersey team last weekend,” said Ice Dogs head coach Trevor Stewart. “He found a way to make timely saves and kept our momentum going.”

For the season, Nieto leads the NAHL in goals-against average (1.74) and is tied for the league lead in wins with 16.
