California trio recognized with weekly EHL, EHLP awards

The EHL has announced its Stars of the Week, with three players hailing from California.

In the Mid-Atlantic Conference, New Jersey 87’s forward Dominic Bertolino and Connecticut Nor’Easter goaltender Dylan Newton earned the honors, while in the EHLP’s Mid-Atlantic Conference, New Jersey Bears defenseman John Ruggiero was named an award winner.

The 87’s offense was unstoppable in their two games against the Pennsylvania Huntsmen and Bertolino a second-year forward from Stockton , played a huge role in that. Bertolino amassed six points in those two wins, a pair of them goals. One came shorthanded in a four point effort. They will host the New Jersey Bears on Tuesday.

Back home, Bertolino played for St. Mary’s Prep and the Stockton Colts.

With a pair of wins this past week, Newton earns the nod of Star of the Week. His first win featured 40 saves against the Valley Jr. Warriors and the San Jose native followed that up with a 23/25 performance against the New York Apple Core. They’ll head to the Cape this Thursday for a matchup against the Seahawks Hockey Club.

In California, Newton spent time with the San Jose Jr. Sharks and Santa Clara Blackhawks.

The Bears picked up two wins in a busy three-game week, and Ruggiero found his way to the scoresheet in each one. In their loss against the Philadelphia Little Flyers, he scored a power-play goal. It was a three-point performance against Union where the Desert Hot Springs native had a hand in every Bears goal, leading to their win. He wrapped up their week with a goal against the New Jersey 87’s. They’ll host the Union Jr. Thunder this Saturday.

Prior to junior hockey, Ruggiero played for the Empire Hockey Club and Jr. Reign and high school hockey for Inland Empire United.
