California trio recognized with weekly NCDC, USPHL awards

The NCDC and USPHL have announced their weekly awards with a trio of California connections collecting weekly honors.

South Shore Kings goalie Justin Bayers is the New England NCDC Division Goaltender of the Week, while Ontario Jr. Reign forward Mason Welsh is the Pacific Premier Division Forward of the Week and Jr. Reign netminder Nick Perry is the Pacific Premier Goaltender of the Week.

Bayers was outstanding in his start against Universel Academy, stopping 35 of 37 shots (.946 save percentage) to backstop a 4-2 win. The Norway native and Los Angeles Jr. Kings alum was steady all night, giving the Kings the backbone they needed in net.

“Justin is one of our six returners,” said Kings coach-GM Tyler Holske. “Last season, he played behind Beau Lane, but was very impressive in the games he played in. He gave us a chance to win when he was in the net. In the game against Universal on Friday, Justin made all the saves he was supposed to and then came up with a few big-time saves at key points in the game. The game was tied 2-2 in the second period and we had to kill off a 5-on-3. Justin was our best player in this situation.”

Welsh tallied three points in the Jr. Reign’s 4-1 win over the Long Beach Bombers on Sept. 27. The Huntington Beach native posted two goals, including the game winner, and dished out an assist.

Back home, Welsh played for the Orange County Hockey Club, Anaheim Jr. Ducks, Jr. Kings, Callifornia Golden Bears and Anaheim Ice Dogs, as well as high school hockey for the North County Spitfires and Edison High School

Perry had a strong performance that same game for the Jr. Reign between the pipes. The Chino Hills native turned away 28 shots and posted a .996 save percentage.

During his youth hockey days, Perry played for the Jr. Kings and high school hockey for Placentia-Yorba Linda.
