McCrea, Pankowski cop weekly NCAA awards

Two California natives – El Cajon’s Alec McCrea and Laguna Hills’ Annie Pankowski – picked up weekly awards in their respective NCAA Division I conferences for the week ending Dec. 7.

McCrea, a freshman defenseman with Cornell University, was named the ECAC Rookie of the Week after leading all league freshmen in scoring while also playing top-four minutes on the blue line in the Big Red’s sweep of Clarkson University and St. Lawrence University.

The former San Diego Jr. Gull posted Cornell’s first three-point effort this season in Saturday’s 5-2 win over Clarkson, which included his first collegiate goal early in the third period. He was also a plus-1 in Friday’s 2-1 win over St. Lawrence.

The rookie defenseman finished with a plus-3 rating for the two games.

Pankowski, a sophomore forward at the University of Wisconsin, was named the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week after tallying three goals, including two game-winners, during the No. 1-ranked Badgers’ sweep of the University of Minnesota.

The former Anaheim Lady Duck ended Friday’s series-opener with the game-winning strike with just 55 seconds left in overtime, lifting the Badgers to a 3-2 victory and snapping UW’s 18-game winless skid against Minnesota.

On Saturday, Pankwoski scored on a breakaway before adding the game-winner in the second period as Wisconsin completed the sweep with a 3-1 triumph.

Pankowski extended her point streak to 21-straight games, which is the fifth-longest in program history and seventh-longest in WCHA annals.
