Sharks prospect Labanc tabbed OHL Player of the Month

The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) announced the Top OHL Performers of the Month for January 2016, and Barrie Colts standout and San Jose Sharks prospect Kevin Labanc is the league’s Player of the Month.

Labanc recorded 12 goals, 18 assists and 30 points in 13 games, along with a plus/minus rating of plus-20 for the Colts.

The OHL’s scoring leader WITH 85 points on 29 goals and 56 assists continued his dominant campaign in the month of January, kicking things off by tying a Barrie regular-season franchise record when he scored three times and added four assists for seven points in a 12-2 win over North Bay on Jan. 2. Just a week later, Labanc recorded a six-point outing with three goals, three assists and six points in a 7-4 win over Mississauga.

The third-year forward had points in 11 of his 13 January contests, with eight of those being multi-point performances. Labanc earned star of the game recognition five times over the course of the month, twice earning first star honors in his six- and seven-point performances.

A native of Staten Island, N.Y., Labanc also has an OHL-leading plus/minus rating of plus-42.

The sixth-round pick of the Sharks in 2014 comes off a 31-goal season in 2014-15 and has also seen success on the international stage, winning a pair of silver medals with the United States at the 2011 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and the 2013 World Under-18 Hockey Championship.

Labanc was originally Barrie’s sixth-round pick (103rd overall) in the 2011 OHL Priority Selection.
