California connections highlight CCM/AHCA Hockey All-Americans for 2020-21 college hockey season

Four NCAA Division I college hockey players with California ties have been named CCM/AHCA Hockey All-Americans for the 2020-21 season.

California natives include Army West Point senior goaltender Trevin Kozlowski (Valencia) and Michigan sophomore defenseman Cam York (Anaheim), while Boston College sophomore defenseman Drew Helleson and Minnesota sophomore defenseman Jackson LaCombe, two former Los Angeles Jr. Kings, earned the prestigious accolades.

Kozlowski went 14-4-1 overall this season for the Black Knights, including a 15-game unbeaten streak in 2021. Kozlowski’s .763 winning percentage was sixth in the nation and he finished ninth in country in goals against average at 1.91, which was an Army single-season record. He led an Army defense that ranked 11th in the nation in scoring defense allowing 2.18 goals per game.

During his youth career, Kozlowski played for the Valencia Express, Los Angeles Jr. Kings, LA Selects and California Titans.

The Big Ten Defenseman of the Year, York led the league’s blueliners in scoring with four goals and 16 assists in 24 games. He set up four game-winning goals, and when he recorded at least one point, the Wolverines posted a 10-3 record.

York played a key role on the top unit for Michigan’s power play that ranked seventh in the nation, and he added five power-play points. A first team All-Big Ten selection, York finished the season plus-13 and had 32 blocked shots.

Internationally, York captained Team USA to a gold medal at the 2021 World Junior Championship this past January. A member of the 2020 team, York earned three previous medals with a gold at the U-17 World Hockey Challenge and a silver and bronze at the Under-18 World Championship.

York, a former Anaheim Jr. Ducks standout, signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Philadelphia Flyers on March 30. He was drafted by the Flyers in the first round (14th overall) of the 2019 NHL Draft.

Helleson was named to the Hockey East First All-Star Team and was recognized as the best defensive defenseman in the league. Helleson was top-20 in the nation in scoring by a defenseman with a career-high 15 points and was plus-23 on the season to rank third nationally.

A First Team All-Big Ten pick, LaCombe led Minnesota’s defensive corps with career highs for points (21), assists (17) and goals (four) in 27 games while leading all Gophers in shorthanded goals (two) and power-play assists (six).

LaCombe ranked eighth among NCAA defensemen in points and fifth in assists. Minnesota was 12-1-0 this year when he tallied a point while the Anaheim Ducks prospect notched assists on the game-winning goal in seven of the team’s 24 wins.

Helleson and LaCombe joined York on the U.S. gold medal-winning World Junior team as well.
