California, Nevada connections claim weekly NCDC, USPHL honors
The USPHL has announced its weekly player awards, with several coming from California and Nevada.
Idaho Falls Spud Kings forward Tyler Atchison is the NCDC Mountain Division Rookie of the Week, while San Diego Sabers blueliner Aidan Cosgrove is the Pacific Premier Division Defenseman of the Week, Hampton Roads Whalers goalie Janic Kennedy is the Southeast Elite Division Goaltender of the Week, and Northern Cyclones netminder Nick Cowles is the New England Elite Division Goaltender of the Week.
Atchison, a 2006 birth year from Las Vegas, put up a pair of goals and added one assist in the Spud Kings’ series against the Casper Warbirds. Atchison, formerly with the Windy City Storm, extended an active point streak to four games with five points over that span.
A local native, Cosgrove, an ‘04 from Carlsbad, entered the Sabers already with two prior years of junior hockey experience. Cosgrove put up a 3-3-6 line in the Sabers’ past three games, with each of his goals being power-play goals. He has 14 points in his first 14 games this season.
In California, Cosgrove skated for the San Diego Saints and Anaheim Jr. Ducks.
Kennedy, an ‘04 from Mission Viejo, put up a 46-save shutout victory against the Charlotte Rush on Oct. 26, giving Kennedy a three-game winning streak in which he’s allowed just one goal on 75 shots back to Oct. 21.
Kennedy is another Saints and Jr. Ducks product.
Cowles, a 2005 birth year from Irvine, scored two wins to move into a tie for second-most wins in the league with five this year. He is undefeated at 5-0, coming off wins against the Islanders Hockey Club (Oct. 23) and Springfield (Oct. 26), over which he stopped 55 of 60 shots.
Previously, Cowles starred with the Jr. Ducks and played high school hockey for JSerra and Irvine United.
