Santa Clara native, Jr. Sharks product Hawthorne gloves weekly UCHC honors
Utica graduate student Angela Hawthorne has been named the UCHC Women’s Goalie of the Week.
The Santa Clara native put in a couple of unbelievable individual performances during this past weekend’s Utica University Kickoff Tournament, where the Pioneers took home the championship with a 3-2 overtime win against No. 5 Elmira.
Hawthorne was untouchable in the semifinal victory over Suffolk, making 25 saves and capturing a 60-minute shutout despite facing six power plays and 12 minutes of penalty kill time. Hawthorne was adept at covering the back side of the goal, gliding over to the back post and stuffing multiple skulking Suffolk attackers to keep the Rams off the board.
Hawthorne followed up that performance with a 33-save performance in the championship game against Elmira, allowing two goals but saving shots at a 94% clip. She picked up two wins during the weekend and saved 58 shots at a 97% rate over her 120 minutes in goal.
In California, Hawthorne spent time with the San Jose Jr. Sharks during her youth hockey career.
